Part 2 / 4
This blog is part of a four part series that looks back on the lecture Children 1st Mediation gave in the Family Mediation Council’s Family Mediation Week 2025. The lecture focus was on the importance of children’s involvement in mediation, and the benefits it can bring to families going through separation. In this second part, we explore the stages of child inclusive mediation and what a parent might expect at each point.
Navigating Financial Decisions in Separation: How Child Inclusive Mediation Can Help
Going through a separation or divorce is tough on the whole family, especially children. If you’re worried about how to make the best decisions for your children’s future and how you might divide assets to support this, Child Inclusive Mediation (CIM) might be the answer. Child focussed Mediation gives your children a safe space to talk about their feelings and needs, helping you make informed choices that work for everyone. It allows them to feel heard without the burden of a final decision, but gives you, as parents, crucial information to use in mediation with your trained mediator to create a plan.
What to Expect in Child Inclusive Mediation
Child Inclusive Mediation is all about putting your children first. Here’s a step-by-step guide to what you can expect:
- Pre-Mediation Meeting: You, your ex partner and the mediator will have a chat to discuss the process, address any concerns, and make sure Child Inclusive Family Mediation is right for your family.
- Consent: Both parents need to give written permission for their children to participate. Remember, Child focussed Mediation is voluntary for everyone involved (including your child)
- Listening to Your Children: A trained mediator will meet with your children in a safe and confidential setting, either in person or online. They’ll use age-appropriate language and creative ways to help your children express themselves.
- Feedback: The mediator will share your children’s thoughts and feelings with you (with their permission). This helps you understand their perspective and make decisions that consider their needs.
- Facilitating Informed Decisions: The mediator will help you explore different options and find solutions that work best for your whole family, especially when it comes to financial matters.
